Fun Food Friday #2

Today's fun snack probably doesn't fit the "healthy" criteria, but it does meet the "easy," "fun," and most importantly, "tasty" criteria!

Pudding Parfaits!

Obviously, these can be made using any variety of ingredients. I happened to receive a mailer earlier in the week from our grocery store that showcased easy, summer foods. This particular parfait was pictured and because I had all the ingredients on hand (and more importantly because I knew the boys liked all of these ingredients!), it worked perfectly.

We used vanilla & chocolate puddings, vanilla wafer cookies (crumbled), sliced bananas, and caramel sauce.

Time to "build your own parfait!"

Looks delish, right?
Unfortunately, we own no such dessert glasses. And oh yeah, I was serving these to children so what difference does it make?

For my children, none. :)

According to Drew, his looks "super good."

And Reed thought his was mighty tasty, as well.

Another FUN fun food Friday!

Craft Wednesday #2

Back in January, Drew brought home a bird feeder that he had made at school.

We hung it on a tree in our backyard, and it stayed there for quite a while; long enough that it needed to be refilled. Or rather, re-peanut-buttered. Shortly after re-seeding the bagel, the squirrels returned to town and it didn't take long for our bird feeder to become a squirrels feast. :(

I told Drew that we'd have to make a new one.

We never did.

Enter Craft Wednesday!
YAY!

In early spring, I had Googled "homemade bird feeders for kids" (or something like that), and I found THIS tutorial on Saltwater Kids.

I won't give much instruction here, as the tutorial is brilliant and very easy to follow, so if you're interested in making these, please go visit Saltwater Kids (I have a few more projects bookmarked for later use. It's a great blog!).

So, with no further ado...Homemade Bird Feeders!

Before I called the boys to the table, I premeasured everything and had it all ready to go. This helped a lot with both time and keeping the boys' attention. We needed flour, water, corn syrup, unflavored gelatin, and of course, bird seed.
{It kinda looks like a science project, no?}

We also needed a large mixing bowl, a cookie sheet, cookie cutters (we also used some rings from canning jars), nonstick cooking spray, straws, waxed paper, and yarn.

The boys did great at taking turns pouring in and mixing the ingredients.

Next, we filled the cookie cutters with the bird seed mixture. Drew was the "pounder man," using the bottom of a measuring cup to work the seed into every curve and corner of the mold. Or really, just making a lot of noise.

Reed was the straw man.
(You need to make a hole with the straw so that you have a place to string the yarn to hang the feeder.)

Now, we wait. And wait and wait and wait for them to dry.

We waited so long it was the next day before we could hang them. :)

We ventured out to the trees this morning, to hang our feeders for the birds. As Drew said, "Here bird! Here bird! Here's your food!" and then, "Mom, all the birds heard me and their gonna come flying in to eat! Hang 'em up, quick!"

That's right, birdies. Come and get 'em!

Stay away squirrels!

Another super successful Craft Wednesday! Both boys stuck with the project, didn't get bored, and were able to participate. And as a side, my only investment for this project was the unflavored gelatin (although, I wondered if maybe a little strawberry or orange flavor would've added a little zing...) and the cookie cutters, which I picked up at a garage sale for a buck. For all six.

Garage sales make me smile.
But that's a post for another day...

I {heart} Grandparents

There isn't much better right now than a visit from the boys' grandparents. This past weekend, Grandma and Grandpa spent a few days with us.

And it was awesome.

Granted, why it was awesome for me is different than why it was awesome for the boys.

This is why it was awesome for the boys...

This is why it was awesome for me:
Two extra sets of hands to clothe, feed, bathe, entertain, read to, play with, tuck in, and overall shower the boys with unending love and attention.

I did not have to cook.
I got to take a nap.
My mother-in-law and I found a desk at a garage sale that I am in love with and can't wait to repaint (that may not have had anything to do with the boys' grandparents being here, but it was definitely a weekend bonus).

Score!

I {heart} grandparents!

Picture of the Day, Week 22

Sunday {5.29.11}
I am so glad to finally have this project completed! I've been wanting to make cloth napkins for quite some time, and have had fabric purchased for a while. They have slowly been coming together, and this week I finally finished them! Now, onto the next project...

Monday {5.30.11}

Tuesday {5.31.11}
The boys' spent quite a while today playing "shopping." The family room was Walmart, the living room was the grocery store, and the kitchen was my house, where the boys brought me their purchases. When the kitchen was "full", they started using the bench to dump their "store" finds. Several times I heard Drew tell Reed, "No, we can't get that; it's not on sale." Ahhh...kid after my own heart! :)

Wednesday {6.1.11}
Summer is here! And the boys spent the afternoon breaking in the sprinkler.

Thursday {6.2.11}
Grandma and Grandpa arrived today for the weekend, and after an afternoon of reading books and playing games, the night concluded with some fun-loving cuddling.

Friday {6.3.11}
We had an awesome day enjoying the 95 degree heat! The boys spent much of the afternoon outside in the pool, and after dinner we had some more outdoor fun in the parking lot. Drew was able to get t-ball pointers from both Dad and Grandpa.

Saturday {6.4.11}
Drew's summer t-ball team.

Fun Food Friday #1

My goal with Fun Food Fridays, much like Craft Wednesdays, is to have a designated day to do something different and fun. The fun food we'll be having on Fridays will be snacks that we make that are out of our ordinary. I have found a handful of ideas in magazines that will be healthy, fun, and easy for the boys to help me make.

Today's treat comes from our Family Fun magazine (the August 2010 issue, if that's helpful for anyone).

Orange Creamsicle Slushies!

Ingredients needed:
orange juice (frozen into ice cubes)
1 cup vanilla yogurt
1 teaspoon honey
1/4 cup orange juice from concentrate

Throw it all into the blender, and blend, baby.
Pour into glasses...

...and enjoy!

These were soooooo good, and the perfect treat after spending the afternoon doing this...

in 95 degree heat!

We'll definitely be making these again!
Five stars for Fun Food Friday #1!

Craft Wednesday #1

One of our goals for this summer is to do art projects on Wednesdays. We're doing this for a couple reasons.

1) Who doesn't love doing art projects?!?! We love 'em!
2) A little structure in our days will do us wonders. It will give all of us something to look forward to, as well as bust any summertime boredom we might experience.
3) It's fun. That's reason enough. :)

All of the crafts we do are borrowed from either a blog or a magazine. There's nothing original here. My hope is that I can find things that both boys are able to do, but I know it might be a challenge to find things that are do-able for Reed and interesting enough for Drew. We'll make it work...somehow. I also don't want to invest too much in these projects. I'm working on putting together an art tray similar to this one, that will require some spending up front. But really, how much can googly eyes and pipe cleaners cost??? I have a lot of supplies in my stash already, and my goal is to use those as much as possible.

Which brings us to today's craft... Project #1!

Doesn't this just make you smile???

This idea comes from HERE, which was brought to my attention by my friend, Bridgette (thanks, Bridgette!). It turned out to be the perfect project for both Drew and Reed. AND I had all the supplies on hand - so no money spent! YAY!

We used my stash of small scraps from my scrapbooking paper, scissors, glue, and newsprint.

I drew an outline of a rainbow on the boys' papers.
Then we went to cutting. Drew did all of his own squares, and I did Reed's for him.
Then we glued.

I put glue dots on Reed's paper, and he quickly caught on to putting his colored scraps on.

Drew had a different approach (and a much bigger rainbow than Reed's - per his request). :) As he cut his squares, he laid them out on his paper to see how it looked before gluing them all down.

I was super impressed with Reed. This kept his attention, and he asked for "more goo" when he was ready to stick on more scraps.

Oops! He did get distracted on just a couple occasions, but he didn't stay away long before he came back to continue "gooing".

All done!

Finally getting it all together.

Craft Wednesday #1 = SUCCESS!

It was so.much.fun!
And these rainbows are already making my kitchen art wall very happy. :)
